Asher McMaher (they/them) is a nationally recognized advocate, speaker, and consultant with over a decade of experience advancing transgender and disability justice. As one of the few leaders in the country who is both transgender and deaf, Asher brings a unique perspective on accessibility and equity, grounding their work in intersectional approaches that create real, lasting change.
With a strong foundation in legal research and policy, Asher has shaped initiatives that protect and empower transgender youth, teens, and young adults. Their work spans direct support, community organizing, and systemic advocacy, ensuring both immediate needs and long-term structural barriers are addressed.
Asher has led and contributed to high-impact campaigns, including organizing Chicago’s Transgender Day of Visibility protest, coordinating a coalition of 40+ organizations for TGNC+ rights, and serving as ACLU National’s designated lead for the SCOTUS response in U.S. v. Skrmetti. Their collaborative leadership and strategic insight have earned them recognition as a trusted voice in both grassroots movements and national advocacy efforts.
Frequently invited to speak at conferences, universities, and community events, Asher has shared their expertise on leadership development, transgender rights, accessibility, and community organizing at spaces such as the Human Rights Conference in Washington, DC during Global Pride. They are also a member of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Bar Association, deepening their work at the intersection of gender identity, sexual orientation, and disability.
